Walden describes a two-year period that Thoreau spent living alone next to a remote pond. He built his own cabin and lived as self-sufficiently as possible, aided only occasionally by his family. The work is a rumination on self-reliance, the majesty of nature and the duty of the individual to express one’s singularity. It his best known work and is still very widely read today.
